Large Scale Conglomerates vs. Family Owned
“What’s the difference and which one should you use?”
Mechanical Service Corporation started in 1976 as a single-person commercial / industrial HVAC service company. In 2019 MSC is currently made up of forty people consisting of HVAC service journeymen, installers, foremen, service manager, parts drivers, mechanical engineers, CFO, Honeywell DDC controls specialists, sales engineers, service scheduling coordinators and a host of others to serve you in your HVAC time of need 24/7.
Truth be told, MSC does not have a multi-million dollar marketing budget like international HVAC companies do but what we do have is high-quality HVAC service technicians. MSC trains extensively in-house but also sends all technicians to a variety of HVAC factory training, air/water balance, and other HVAC seminars throughout the course of a normal year.
The inside track of MSC’s success is actually quite simple, the owner of MSC never wanted to be the biggest fish in the HVAC service pond, he wanted MSC to be the smartest fish in the HVAC pond and also told his crew to always help the customer.
As the last recession took its toll, many “well-known” “family-owned” New Jersey HVAC service contractors that had been around for many years closed their doors for the last time. MSC again survived another recession by understanding that “service technician knowledge” is the name of the game.
Concentrating on heavy technician training helps MSC techs find problems in less time than it takes most other HVAC companies to find them. That was the MSC founding principle and it is still working today. Much of the MSC’s service training comes directly from the owner himself to the crew “face to face” in monthly meetings, again, much different than corporate.
International HVAC service companies most often will subcontract their vibration analysis. MSC offers vibration analysis, trending and diagnosis as another part our particular HVAC menu of services “under one roof”.
Most Global HVAC service companies subcontract their air and water balance. MSC is NEBB certified” for air and water balance. We serve many clients in the pharmaceutical, hospital and manufacturing sectors with our air and water balance trouble shooting skills.
HVAC International manufacturers bid out their replacement parts like coils to a separate coil manufacturer for the “best” pricing. At MSC, we have most of our replacement coils “custom-made” to our own heavier specifications which many times are twice the wall thickness of the “Coke-can” OEM replacement copper coils. To put it bluntly, MSC’s replacement coil will usually last longer than a “competitively priced” OEM coil.
MSC has always had both the flexibility and the freedom to select the best replacement parts for our clients as we see fit. In the HVAC replacement parts arena however the Globals are very rigid and usually will only sell and install the “high-priced, low-quality” OEM factory replacement parts where on the other hand MSC is installing “better made” replacement parts wherever possible. MSC would rather install better replacement parts because they last longer.
Through the decades we have seen too often where a client of the global HVAC service company is a little behind in their payments and the global service company won’t respond to any emergency service calls, no matter how dire leaving them in a bind.
At MSC, we understand that the money doesn’t always flow the way that we all hoped it would so if you are a little behind, we will still come out and help you. The Global Internationals are only following standard corporate procedure that will leave you both frustrated and hanging. That’s exactly when you should call MSC.
Most recently, there seems to have been a rash of Global HVAC service companies getting bogged down in fancy computer-generated E-mail customer surveys to see how well their staff did rather than just sending a competent, well-trained HVAC technician 24/7 to diagnose their problem and take care of it.
You can now count the number of large, family-owned commercial / industrial HVAC service companies in North Jersey on one hand, and with a couple of fingers tied behind your back. MSC, like David, is a family-owned HVAC service company acting in our client’s best interest every day and always try to do the right thing for our clients.
