Summer Heat Safety
Air conditioning techs rarely work in cool spaces, after all that is why they are there, to get cooling working. Most air handlers are located in hot places like attics, mechanical rooms, roofs etc. Roofs with black rubber membrane that attract the suns heat can reach 110 - 115 F on a hot day in the mid to upper 90s. Mechanical rooms can reach over 100 F and attics can reach 120 - 140 F.
Extreme temperatures are part of the job and you need to be prepared. You need to be in excellent health as you may need to carry tools, tanks, parts and equipment out of these environments. Try to minimize and watch your time in these extreme conditions. Take breaks often and drink plenty of cold water to cool your core temperature.
The older you are the more careful you need to be. Heat stress comes on rapidly where you may not even notice at first and it can become a dangerous situation quickly. Have a buddy system and try not to work alone. Have a radio or some form of communication on hand in case of emergency. If really hot days are coming try to schedule repairs for early morning or after hours to avoid the extreme heat of the day. Drink cold fresh water continuously to stay hydrated, avoid coffee and alcohol. Where light clothing and a hat or a light damp towel over your neck to avoid sunburn and keep you cool if you absolutely need to be in the sun. And of course use sunscreen on your face arms neck and ears as it does not take long to get sunburn.
If you’re going to be going on a white roof please protect your eyes from glare and avoid tripping hazards by wearing quality sunglasses. Use common sense, know your limits, take precautions as your safety is always priority number one. Parts are replaceable your not!
